Materials that work for dogs

Wood privacy or picket-top fences are a common choice for dogs. Solid boards block the view that triggers barking, and cedar or pressure-treated pine is budget-friendly. See wood fences.

Vinyl is tough, smooth and hard to climb, with no staining. See vinyl fences.

Chain link is practical and affordable for large areas and dog runs. Black vinyl-coated chain link blends into the yard better than plain galvanized. See chain link fences.

Aluminum works for calm dogs and gives an open look, as long as picket spacing is tight enough for your dog’s size.

The weak spots, and how we deal with them

• Under the gate. Gates need a bit of clearance to swing, which is where many small dogs escape. We keep that gap as small as the ground allows.
• Low spots on slopes. Where the ground dips between posts, gaps open under the bottom rail. On a sloped yard, we follow the grade or step the fence and fill those gaps.
• Latches. Some dogs learn to nose a latch open. A latch that needs a lift or a pull, not just a push, helps.
• Climbable features. Horizontal rails on the dog’s side can become ladders. We put the smooth side facing in when it matters.
• Kids and guests. Most escapes happen through a gate someone left open. Self-closing hinges are worth considering.

A note on the neighborhood

Dogs and deer don’t mix well, and deer pressure is heavy across Bucks County. A tall fence that keeps your dog in can also keep deer out of the yard, which a lot of gardeners appreciate. Fencing part of the yard

You don’t always need to fence the whole property. A fenced area off the back door, or a dog run along the side of the house, can give your dog safe space and save you money on footage. That’s especially useful on bigger lots in upper and central Bucks, where fencing everything can mean a long run over rocky ground.

Planning a fenced area also lets you think about the dog’s daily routine. Put the gate close to the door you actually use. Leave some shade inside the fence line, whether that’s a tree or the side of the house. And if your dog will spend time out there alone, give the fence a once-over every few months for loose boards or new digging spots.
