What makes a fence “secure”
No fence is impossible to get past. A good security fence makes it harder, slower and more visible. That comes down to a few basics.
- Height. Taller is harder to get over, within what your township’s zoning allows.
- Climb resistance. Few footholds and small openings. Rails and crossbars on the outside make climbing easier.
- Tops. Spear-top pickets or other deterrent tops discourage climbing where they’re allowed.
- Strong posts. Posts set deep enough to resist being pushed or pulled, and below the frost line, commonly around 30 to 36 inches here.
- Controlled gates. The gate is usually the weak point. Good hardware, locks and, where it makes sense, automated access.
- Visibility. Sometimes you want to see through the fence, so nobody can hide behind it.

Security for homes
Residential security usually looks different. Think ornamental steel or aluminum around the front, a sturdy privacy fence around the back, and gates that lock. A security fence only works if it stays intact. Walk the perimeter regularly.
